PAINT YOURSELF IN THE STARS, ALL CHILDREN ARE AT HOME THERE
A creative coloring book for mothers and fathers of stillborn children
Where does life begin and how is it defined by society? In this special coloring book, visual artist Adriane Wachholz traces an unprocessed phase of grief that receives little attention in our society. Statistically, one in seven women worldwide experiences a miscarriage or stillbirth, yet this topic is rarely talked about or is systematically trivialized as “normal”. Interestingly, these special children do not have an established term in English, which is not only a linguistic gap but also a social invisibility. In the German language, the term “Sternenkind” (star child) is used.
Adriane Wachholz has taken up the line to trace the path to her own stillbirth daughter in drawings. The result is a coloring book in which 38 hand drawings pulsate abstractly between cells, planets and suns and serve as creative starting images for affected mothers and fathers. With this book, she is following her mission to bring the healing aspect of visual art into society. Each drawing takes up an entire page and can be expanded with additional colors, techniques and shapes. The left-hand side of the picture is decorated with a spiral of meaning that can be answered in the generous free space. At the back of the book there are 20 blank pages for further personal, creative development.
With this book, the artist also wants to reach the generations of women whose personal experiences with miscarriage, stillbirth or abortion lie further in the past and who now want to find a way out of the silence. The artist is not interested in reliving the grief, but in strengthening the ancestral bond and integrating the angel child into life through her own creative power.
